The Culture of Cosmetic Surgery in Asia

Source: Beyond Hallyu

Cosmetic surgery has grown to be more popular in Asia. In fact one of the countries that have the most cosmetic enhancement actually belongs in Asia.  Today a lot of Asians are going under the knife not only to look westernized but rather enhance their ethnic characteristics.

In the past years, we can see that a lot of people, both men and women alike, are willing to go under the knife to get the aesthetic improvement that they desire. And this is regardless of how many nips and tucks they have to endure.

Cultural hang-ups in the past have delayed the rise of cosmetic surgery in Asia. But when it has finally penetrated the region, it seems that a lot of Asians want to make changes on their features.

At present, Koreans are dominating in numbers which now have become part of their culture. It was even said that it is rare to find Koreans in the entertainment industry that have not gotten anything tweaked in their bodies. See latest cosmetic surgery statistics below.

The same thing can also be said even for the common people. From simple eyelid surgeries to the total overhaul, these patients practically changed their looks more than anyone could imagine.

Cosmetic surgery has changed the lives of so many Asians for the better. For those who wanted more definition to their eyes, they were able to do so with double eyelid surgery. So many also felt better with their rather flat Asian nose through rhinoplasty, and others were able to get the form that they prefer through liposuction or breast augmentation surgery.

But aside from the benefits, there are also instances where the rise of cosmetic surgery has become a problem for some. For example, the case where a man in China sued his wife for not being honest with what she really looked like. Apparently, her cosmetic surgeon did a good job which totally transformed her. Unfortunately this did not please her husband when he saw what their baby looked like. It was then when he found out that his wife had cosmetic surgery even before they met, which was a fact she forgot to mention. Today she faces charges of fraud.

Asians are also being criticized for getting cosmetic surgeries because this was seen as an action which shows that they are denying their ethnic background. For instance, the double eyelid surgery was considered to be something that would make Asians look more Caucasian as it designs the eyes to become wider.

However, today cosmetic surgeons design their approach and techniques to deliver a result that would not deviate from the patient’s ethnicity. This is why we now hear terms such as Asian Double Eyelid Surgery or Asian Rhinoplasty.

These procedures are carefully tailored to maintain the Asian features while creating the enhancements needed.

At present Asia has become one of the top destinations for cosmetic surgery tourism. Korea, Thailand, India and Singapore are among the big names that provide quality cosmetic surgery results at reasonable prices.
