Asian Rhinoplasty- The Risks of Using Nasal Silicone Implants

Song Hye Kyo was alleged

Asian rhinoplasty remains to be the most requested cosmetic procedure among Asians today, but what really goes on behind the scene?

In doing the enhancements, one of the commonly used materials is silicone implants. And for so many years, it has proven to create successful results; however there are also side effects to these types of nose implants. If you choose to have this, here are some points that you need to consider.

Implant Deviation

Since silicone nose implants heal through encapsulation. The body treats the implant as a foreign object, which is why the natural reaction of the body is to form a capsule around it. However, this can be a very loose attachment where any force applied around the nasal area can result in a malposition of the implant which causes deviation.

Contracture formation and implant migration

There are patients who do not develop any reaction to the implant immediately, even resulting to highly satisfactory results during the early years. But the problem occurs when the force exerted on the hard elastic silicone implant creates pressure necrosis. Also this action can cause an eventual migration of the implant upward, giving the patient a pig nose appearance.

Severe Contracture Formation

If in the case of a contracture and the implant was not removed immediately it could result to severe contracture formation. This can also form some irregularities and scar tissues on the nasal bridge. In order to remedy this problem, it can be rather difficult to treat, but a grafting procedure can be done to make the result appear aesthetically satisfying.

Destruction of the columella

The middle portion of the nose can be prone to scar formation in the event of a surgery. This can also open the area to infection. An infected silicone implant that remains untreated can result in the destruction of the columella.

In some instances, even when the implants have been removed, some of the residual tissues also have the tendency to develop crevice-like scars either on the tip or on the bridge. That is why skin grafting techniques are necessary to correct this condition.

Implant extrusion

This is one of the common problems experienced with nasal implants. What happens is that the implant may erode the soft tissues that have the least resistance which is the incision line. This can be highly visible, and the proper treatment would be the immediate removal of the implant.

Aspiration

A silicone implant that is anchored too deep into the septal spine can result to the erosion of the premaxilla, more commonly known as the palate bone. This can be a very dangerous problem because it can result to food and saliva going into the nasal cavity which can cause eventual aspiration.

Calcium deposits

Patients who received silicone nasal implants may remain to be asymptomatic for certain problems for many years. But the concern here is that there is growing evidence today that calcium crystal deposits are present in implants that have been there for so long. The presence of crystals can result in nasal bridge irregularity.
